"My Christmas dress was made truly special with the fabric I got from Tenuci. As I entered church, the first comment I got was “love the coat”. My aunt loved the red. I gave her your website to order it so I could make it for her. The red fabric was on sale no less and I did not know what I wanted to make just that I wanted it. The black was not on sale but was a perfect addition. I love these fabrics and have always found it difficult to find stores or fabrics that I like. Shopping at Tenuci has given me a great outlet to do my shopping.

Nigeria and Austrian Lace
Vienna's Museum for Social Ethnographic in Vienna has recently opened a new exhibit of LACE in partnership with Nigeria's National Museum in Lagos.
The Vienna's museum was redesigned with a lacey look to commensurate the exhibition that runs from October, 2010 through February 14th, 2011. Austrian lace has become a household name for high quality embroidery popularly called lace. Laces are used for many different occasions in Nigeria and other parts of Africa like Senegal and Ghana. Laces were originally used in Nigeria as hemming for underwears and the Nigerian people of Delta and Eastern Nigeria (Igbos) used laces for making women blouses which they used for wearing their wrappers.
The embroidery producers in Austria later discovered the broader Nigerian market in the 1960's when an Austrian business man stopped over at the Nigeria's former capital Lagos and found out that the Nigerian women wore a lot of bright embroidered clothes. He later returned with samples of The Austrian Lace which became a hit and had remained so since then. The business blossomed as laces are now used in so many different occasions in Nigeria and other African countries. In Nigeria, they are used for events like weddings, Naming Ceremonies, Re-unions, and so many group events.
Dr. Plakensteiner was the one who worked tirelessly to achieve this project and she has been working on in since 2008. She explained that the Swiss had always produced laces but it was Austria who inspired and produced the the kind of laces that appealed to the Nigerian consumers. The people who use the laces the most are the Yorubas in Nigeria. The other parts of Nigeria who wear the laces may wear it in combination with other fabrics like Georges or Hollandis while the Yorubas wore them as their sole outfit.
Austrian Lace is facing a strong competition from countries like China and Korea but Austria and Switzerland's high quality designs has continued to set it apart from the rest.

Patrice Nassalang is a master dancer from Senegal, West Africa. He is the founder and artistic director of Jam Ak Jam Afro-Dance Theatre and has been living in the USA for 10 years now.
